Shahzad F. Siddiqui

Shahzad F. Siddiqui is the Managing Partner of Abrahams LLP and practices in the areas of private equity, complex commercial and tort litigation, and wills & estates.

Through his diverse practice areas, Shahzad advises entrepreneurs, partnerships, corporations and non-profit organizations through several stages of their life cycle.  He has advised start-up companies that have ultimately listed on the TSX-V, that have entered into joint venture relationships with world-class manufacturers, relocated to offshore jurisdictions or unwound from an existing structure.

Shahzad has also been involved in some of the most important legal actions in Ontario, including a precedent-setting case against the Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corporation, the Tahir Khan and Jordan Selkirk tragedies, pediatric brain injury cases, breach of trust actions and Commercial List securities litigation.

Shahzad is the author of several publications, including Shari'a-Compliant Private Equity: A Primer for the Executive, published with Euromoney Books, and "Estate Planning for the Wealthy Entrepreneur" in the Financial Post. He is currently completing a new book on Islamic infrastructure finance with a former technical advisor to the royal family of Abu Dhabi and Dr. Walid Hejazi, a professor at the University of Toronto Rotman School.

Academic Background

A graduate of the University of Toronto, Shahzad obtained an LL.B from Osgoode Hall Law School in 2002 and an LL.M from the University of Pennsylvania Law School in 2011, where he wrote a Master's thesis entitled, "From Cradle to Grave and Back: the Regulation of Islamic Finance in North America." In 2010, he lectured with Mufti Talha Azami at Harvard Law School on the topic of "Abrahamic finance" and he has chaired conferences on Islamic finance in Toronto, Kuala Lumpur, Philadelphia and New York.

From 2004-5, Shahzad taught international business transactions and international law at Southwest University of Political Science and Law, a top-tier law school in the People's Republic of China.  He subsequently spearheaded the entry of a government-backed company based in Chongqing, the world's largest city, into South Asia.

Shahzad was profiled in The National Jurist magazine in November 2013, as an outstanding LL.M graduate of a U.S. law school. He was previously profiled as managing partner of the firm in the "Meet the Head" column of Islamic Finance News in September 2011.

Interests

Shahzad speaks English, Urdu/Hindi and Mandarin Chinese.

He has completed marathons in Toronto and on the Great Wall of China.

In his spare hours, he enjoys competitive polo and time with his two baby girls.

He also volunteers as a director of the International Development and Relief Foundation.

  • Assisting a TSX-V listed technology company in ongoing litigation matters in Ontario, Canada.
  • Litigated breach of fiduciary duty and conversion of property action for a Canadian television broadcaster.
  • Retained by world's third largest fragrance manufacturer on commercial real estate/environmental litigation in Toronto, Canada.
  • Acted for one of Canada's largest physiotherapy networks at the Commercial List Court in obtaining a final order for a Plan of Arrangement with a diversified English conglomerate listed on the London Stock Exchange.
  • Representing Canada's largest grocery and baking company in appellate tax litigation.
